Blogger Tour!


1) What am I working on?
 I like to post different stuff, from recipes to interviews of movers and shakers that I admire. I am a huge advocate of biking and farming, so some of my posts feature those folks who feel the same way. 

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?
It is exciting that there are so many people interested in delicious, high quality food. I do have a big melange of posts, but I am happy to share this genre with many other bloggers.


3) Why do I write what I do?
I write because I enjoy it. It helps me to be a better dietitian if I am able to explain things clearly. It is also important that I can demonstrate that I am walking the walk that I promote with them. 

4) How does your writing process work?
Sometimes I am writing with a prompt, such as my monthly post for the Recipe Redux. Other times I simply have a new recipe to share. I try to make the recipes have enough details so that they're easy to follow, even for a beginner cook. I also love featuring work by my interns. Everyone's voice is different!

Blog Brulee: Looking forward to a writers retreat in Vermont

Recently, I had one of those wonderful weeks where a million good things happen all at once. I got several contract work projects, I started with a new private practice client and then on Friday, I received an invitation to attend the inaugural Blog Brulee writers workshop this fall in September! Bingo!

I discovered how much I enjoy writing when I took a year off after grad school. I spent most of a year exploring our big beautiful world, trying new delicious foods and writing home about the adventures. From making homemade corn tortillas in an outdoor kitchen on an avocado farm in Mexico, to defending my banana "panqueques" from tropical birds in Costa Rica, to playing beer pong with my younger brother in Germany, I digested these experiences via my stomach and keyboard. Food and story telling are a great match!

With tumbleweeds in my bank account, it was time to buckle down and get to work. I moved to DC from Ohio and jumped into big city living. Writing took a back seat as I spend the next years working for WIC, a hospital and teaching nutrition at a community college.

But I missed writing!

I started my own little blog and was thrilled to have the creative outlet. The challenge of food photography, or writing directions so that they make sense to a novice cook, and the opportunity to try new recipes were what I needed.

Fast forward, I have returned to Ohio, launched my own private practice and continue to blog and do freelance writing projects. I am really excited for this opportunity to spend a weekend with fellow foodies and writers and to learn how to do all of this better. I cringe when I look back at my early food photos.

I am excited to continue to hone the craft of writing, to talk about how to monetize my writing projects and to continue to grow my brand.

I have never been to Vermont, so I am also excited to visit a new state!

Planning, Preparation, and Progress: Overall Health for a Busy Schedule

We’ve covered our physical health in the sense of nutrition and fitness, but we can’t forget about one of the most important aspects of health…our mental health!

No matter how well you eat or how frequently you exercise, you will not look good until you feel good, so here are a few ways to incorporate mental health into a busy schedule:

1.            Smile! No matter what you do to get ready in the morning, you’re looking at yourself in the mirror at some point…so smile! Studies show that smiling literally makes you happier…it makes you find things funnier, sweeter, etc. So even if it’s only a few seconds long, start your day with a smile!

2.            Cut out negativity! Scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, etc. and come upon that one person who always has nothing but negative things to say? Even if the negativity has nothing to do with your own life, reading about negative things can affect your mood. So unfollow them! You don’t need that added negativity in your life! And if this is a person in real life, do the same thing! If all this person ever does is bring you down, make the decision best for you and cut them out of your life. 

3.            No More “Big-Green-Monster”! The saying that jealousy is the ugliest trait applies here, nothing good comes from excessive envy! There’s nothing wrong with seeing someone and admiring something they have, or their looks, but don’t make a habit out of it! Constantly obsessing over what other people have that you don’t won’t get you anywhere (except for sad!). So instead of complaining about what you don’t have, start being thankful for what you do! 

4.            Outweigh the negatives! So back to looking at yourself in the mirror…it’s most common for people to point out all of their negatives, so if you do this, outweigh them with positives! Look in the mirror and find five things that are wrong with how you look? Find six that are right. If you think you look good, you DO look good! Confidence is the best accessory you can wear. 

5.            Play Dress-up! Like I mentioned earlier, if you feel good, you’ll look good. And who doesn’t feel good all glammed up? So treat yourself! Plan something like a night out, a dinner date, or even a shopping trip and go all out with your hair, make-up, clothes, everything and feel CONFIDENT about it! You know what they say…when in doubt, over dress!
